Why Stain a Wood Fence
Stain Brings the Color Back and Slows the Weathering Down
Sun and rain turn bare wood gray over a few seasons. A penetrating stain puts color back into the boards and slows that weathering down. It cannot save a board that has already gone soft, so those get swapped first and loose ones refastened, and the stain goes onto sound wood.
Shatkoff stains fences it built and fences it did not. On a new fence it is usually a second visit: treated pine goes up wet and needs its first season to dry before it will take stain properly, while cedar can usually be sealed sooner. When Shatkoff Fencing stains a fence, it is Cabot Australian Timber Oil. It is a transparent oil that soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top of it like paint, so the grain still shows through and there is no film to peel later.
All five colors are below, from Natural, the lightest, to Mahogany Flame and Jarrah Brown at the dark end. Screens show wood color a little differently, so narrow it to one or two here, try them on a whole fence in the fence builder, and ask about them when you get your quote.

No. Vinyl never needs paint, stain or sealer, and aluminum holds its finish with soap and water. Staining is for wood fences, and for cedar when you want to keep its red.
