Choosing the Material for a Privacy Fence
Wood gives you the most privacy for the money. Treated pine goes up green, dries over its first season and then takes stain. Cedar has its own oils, so it resists rot and insects without treatment and stays straighter as it dries; sealed it keeps its red, and left alone it weathers to gray. Either one takes the color you want and can be restained later to bring it back.
Vinyl costs more per foot up front and then asks for nothing but a wash. It does not rot, fade or need paint, and Shatkoff installs it in six colors, two of them woodgrain, so a vinyl privacy fence does not have to be white. It is a common pick for pool yards and for anyone who never wants to stain.

How tall can a privacy fence be in Louisville, KY?
In a Louisville Metro side or back yard, a solid fence that is at least 80% opaque can be 8 feet tall, and an open fence such as aluminum stops at 6. Out front the limit is 48 inches in suburban form districts and 42 in traditional ones. Twelve cities inside Jefferson County write their own rules: St. Matthews allows 7 feet in back, while Hurstbourne and Douglass Hills hold fences to 6. The fence rules page lists every town.
Do I need a permit for a 6 foot privacy fence in Louisville?
Not from Louisville Metro. Metro requires a building permit only for fences over 7 feet and retaining walls over 4 feet. Some cities inside Jefferson County add their own step: Hurstbourne and Prospect want a permit for every fence, and St. Matthews and Douglass Hills issue a letter of compliance first. Deed restrictions and HOA rules can apply on top of any of these.
What is the most private fence style?
A solid privacy fence and a board-on-board fence both close the run completely. Board-on-board overlaps the boards instead of butting them together, so no gap opens up as the wood dries. A shadowbox stops the straight-on view but lets air pass between the boards.
Which side of a privacy fence faces the neighbor?
On a solid privacy fence the boards go on one face of the rails, and standard practice is the finished face out, toward the neighbor and the street. A shadowbox looks finished from both sides, which is why it is called a good neighbor fence. Some cities write the rule down: New Albany requires the finished side to face outward unless both owners share the cost of the fence.
Is wood or vinyl better for a privacy fence?
Wood is the most privacy for the money and takes any stain color; it needs restaining over the years. Vinyl costs more per foot but never needs paint, stain or sealer, just a wash with soap and water, and it comes in six colors including two woodgrains. Both block the view completely.
Should a wood privacy fence be pine or cedar?
Treated pine is the budget workhorse: it goes up green, dries over the first season and then takes stain. Cedar resists rot and insects with its own oils and stays straighter as it dries, and it costs more. Redwood is the most stable and the most expensive. The crew can show you samples at the estimate.
Can a privacy fence go on a sloped yard?
Yes. On a slope the fence is either stepped, so each section stays level and steps down the grade, or racked, so the section follows the ground. In Louisville Metro the height is measured from the lowest ground within a foot of either side of the fence, which matters on a steep lot. The crew checks the grade at the measure.
How long does it take to install a privacy fence?
Most residential fences go up in a day or two once the materials are on site. The length of the run, the slope, the number of gates, an old fence coming out and the weather all move that, and your written quote includes the timeline for your job.
Do you take out the old fence?
Yes. Old wood, vinyl, chain link and aluminum fences are torn out and hauled off as part of the job, and old concrete footings come out where the new posts need the spots. Removal is in the same written price as the new fence.

Nothing is due to get on the schedule. Approving the quote within 3 days takes 5% off the price, and veterans get 10% off any fence. Mention it when you call or text so it is on the written quote from the start.
