A Pool Fence Is a Barrier First and a Fence Second
A pool fence is the one fence the code tells you how to build. Its job is to keep a young child from reaching the water without an adult, so the rules care about height, about gaps a child could slip through or under, and above all about the gate. In Louisville Metro the barrier has to stand at least 4 feet above the ground, with a gate that closes itself, latches itself and takes a lock. The Kentucky Residential Code sets the same 48 inches statewide and has walk gates swing out, away from the pool.
Black aluminum suits a pool well. It does not rust beside the water, the pickets keep the pool in view from the house, and the panels step down a slope so the bottom of the fence stays close to the ground. Vinyl and wood privacy fences work as pool barriers too when the yard needs screening, as long as the height, the gaps and the gates meet the rule.

Every town Shatkoff serves sets a minimum height for the barrier around a pool, in its own code or through the state residential code. This is that minimum. Taller is fine, up to the town's limit for a back-yard fence.

Measure and check the rule

Utility locate
Before any post hole is dug, Kentucky 811 or Indiana 811 is called so each utility can mark its buried lines. In Kentucky that call goes in 2 to 10 full working days ahead, at no charge.

Every post is set in concrete, and the panels step down the slope so the bottom of the fence stays close to the ground all the way around.

Pool gates are hung with self-closing hinges and a latch that catches on its own, so they swing true and latch every time.

How tall does a pool fence have to be in Louisville, KY?

Does a pool fence need a self-closing gate?

Can a privacy fence be my pool fence?
Yes, if it meets the same rule: tall enough, no gap a child can get through or under, and gates that close, latch and lock on their own. A vinyl or wood privacy fence also keeps the neighbors from seeing into the pool, which an aluminum fence does not.
Does an automatic pool cover replace the fence?
Not in Oldham County: its pool permit form says an automatic cover does not replace the barrier. Sellersburg, Clark County and Charlestown accept a mechanical cover in place of the fence. Anywhere else, ask the city before you count on a cover.

How long does a pool fence take to install?
Most residential fences go up in a day or two once the materials are on site. The length of the run, the slope, the number of gates and the weather all move that, and your written quote includes the timeline for your job.
Is there a deposit, and are there discounts?
Nothing is due to get on the schedule. Approving the quote within 3 days takes 5% off the price, and veterans get 10% off any fence. Mention it when you call or text so it is on the written quote from the start.
